Realizing You – An Introduction
We will each be somewhere, doing something in the future. We will have changed by then, maybe a little, maybe considerably, having undergone some degree of transformation. For many, perhaps most of us, where specifically we will be, what we will be doing, what experiences we will have lived through, which people will be part of our lives, and how we will have changed by the time we arrive at this future destination is perhaps mostly unknown. Although we don’t have the ability to orchestrate many of the life experiences that will ultimately influence us, our to-be circumstances and the nature of our future self are nevertheless largely under our control, dependent on how we design and direct our personal course of evolution. The principal theme to which we dedicate this website, self-realization, holds that the dreaming we do, directions we select, and actions we take in the present to chart an evolutionary course and follow it have considerable bearing on the quality and satisfaction of our existence.
Who are you now, who will you become? Someday an obituary will be written for each of us. In reflecting your life, what will its author be apt to say about you? Imagine your future autobiography, written as a fantasy. What might you envision as your essential storyline? What elements of your life experience would you emphasize because of their importance to you, because they are consistent with your hopes, dreams, and values? What experiences could you describe that have left you with powerful feelings, either good or bad? How would you reflect on how these experiences have shaped you as an individual?
As a significant component of your life’s journey, what do you consider to be an ideal career path, and how would you define vocational success? Does your career outlook include such elements as advancement through a series of job titles, increasing levels of responsibility, being challenged in your work, having the opportunity to exercise creativity, supporting the needs of others, arranging certain working conditions/hours, settling on a certain work life balance, attaining or reinforcing financial security? Maybe some or all of these considerations are important to you, and you may have other ideas of what constitutes a meaningful work life.
Are you sometimes anxious about the future? Here’s some good news – you can stop worrying, it will work out! Consider the perspective of the Dalai Lama - if you can do something about that which troubles you, there’s no need to worry, and if you can’t do anything about it, there’s no sense in worrying! Aside from being unproductive, unnecessary worry about the future tends to be a self-destructive tendency that saps energy, erodes motivation, and otherwise distracts us from the ability to focus on more constructive developmental pursuits. Our suggestion – quit worrying and read on!
Self-realization can be described as holistic personal fulfillment, seeking and reaching the promise of a productive, rewarding future while furthering a personal legacy characterized by the qualities, contributions, achievements, and commitment to values consistent with one’s autobiographical vision. A program of self-realization emphasizes self-discovery, self-awareness, continuous refinement of a personal vision, cultivating a positive mindset, seeking and embracing opportunities, and establishing and carrying out a continuous program of self-development and self-improvement.
